MUSHO
Musho moves effortlessly between abstract sound exploration and the immediacy of song—with the haunting effect of diving into water: like a powerful, tender embrace.
The duo of Sofia Jernberg and Alexander Hawkins draws on a shared affinity for Ethiopian music – both have honed their musical expressions in close collaboration with important musical figures in the country: Jernberg with Hailu Mergia, Hawkins with Mulatu Astatke.
Jernberg and Hawkins played their first concert together in October 2016 at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam under the name Musho – an Amharic word for “sad song.” Jernberg often pushes the outer limits of vocal expression, from Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire to projects with Mats Gustafsson. Hawkins is considered a unique musician on the contemporary scene, a distinguished bandleader and composer, and a duo partner of Tomeka Reid, Nicole Mitchell, Angelika Niescier, and others.
