Neal Sugarman Quintet
If you love soul, you know Daptone Records. Few other labels have had such a decisive influence on the soul revival of the early 2000s as this New York flagship. At the center of it all: Neal Sugarman, saxophonist, producer, bandleader – and co-founder of the legendary label.
As part of the Dap-Kings, Daptone’s house band, Sugarman made music history. The band not only accompanied the incomparable Sharon Jones, but also contributed to albums by Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson, and Al Green – always with the unmistakable, earthy sound that made Daptone world famous.
Neal Sugarman recently moved to Zurich. What remains is his musical vision: uncompromisingly analog, full of groove, deeply rooted in the African-American musical tradition – yet open to new encounters and influences. In his current projects, Sugarman combines his experience from the New York soul scene with a fresh perspective on Europe
