Ohad Talmor Back to the Land
Tenor saxophonist Ohad Talmor surprises us once again: on his latest double album, Back to the Land, he dedicates himself to previously unreleased compositions by Ornette Coleman, which Coleman once rehearsed with Lee Konitz and played live in 1998—after which they fell into oblivion. Talmor has transcribed the pieces, reinterpreted them, and added his own variations. Two works by his teacher Dewey Redman are also included.
The music is bright, crystalline, and transparent in its clarity. Its combination of lightness and structural depth is reminiscent of the late Lee Konitz, with whom Talmor himself worked on several occasions, but also of the precise, poetic vocabulary of Wayne Shorter. An elegant, surprising album—and a quiet tribute to great pioneers of jazz.
