Zumthor’s Books & Alcohol Sextet
A chamber symphony with triple double instrumentation: two wind instruments, two pianos, two percussion instruments. Six outstanding musicians from very different backgrounds come together. In Zumthor’s approximately 60-minute composition “Bücher & Alkohol” (Books & Alcohol), these contrasting personalities seem to be magnetically attracted to each other – and merge into a common sound organism.
The unconventionally assembled ensemble develops its own personality, and the music becomes an attitude: independent, multi-layered, uncompromising. The result is a sound panorama of driving beat rotations, wild melancholy, subtle humor, dark gong ballads, primeval states, frenetic energy, bitter lamentations – and Franz Schubert.
