Dave Douglas New Quintet

To describe Dave Douglas as a trumpeter would be a gross understatement. He’s a composer full of ideas, but his collaborations, with which he constantly reinvents himself, really set him apart. In so doing, he has an unerring sense for unearthing exceptional artists among the countless promising young talents of today’s music scene. He enjoys gathering various rising stars around him. As a fixed star, he also likes to let others rise, glow and shine alongside him. At a time when spontaneous musical encounters are no longer commonplace, even in jazz music – as the zeitgeist increasingly demands fixed ensembles and projects with recognition value – the free play of forces still prevails on Dave Douglas’ stage. While other bands define themselves from the outset as equal collectives, the Douglas band members can try their hand at being sparring partners, in the best sense of the word, and decide for themselves at each concert what their place on stage will be.

In the quintet’s current line-up, Dave Douglas has called on the legendary Joey Baron to drum up a young bunch: Nick Dunston on double bass is presently making a name for himself as a key member of Mary Halvorson’s current ensemble Amaryllis; before that, he played with Marc Ribot, Craig Taborn or Ches Smith, among others. Polish pianist Marta Warelis delivers a dash of classical avant-garde, which she lets resonate in a rather sparkling fashion. And finally: James Brandon Lewis, a saxophonist with young fingers and an old soul (currently causing a sensation with his album “Eye of I”), will try his hand at Dave Douglas’ music.
